LA CIOTAT

The port of La ciotat

La Ciotat,bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, is located between Marseille and Toulon. The city is known for its beautiful beaches, its hidden coves, its nautical activities and its cultural richness. It is an ideal destination for lovers of the sea, nature and culture.

La Ciotat has a long history, dating back to Roman times, and experienced a period of prosperity in the 19th century with the rise of the shipbuilding industry. It is also considered the cradle of cinema. The Lumière brothers shot their first films here in 1895.

Among the places to visit in La Ciotat, we can mention:

-Fine sandy beaches which slope gently without water holes,  Many bathing establishments line along the beaches and the atmosphere is lively.

-Creekswith their breathtaking landscapes. The Calanque de Figuerolles, famous for its reddish rocks and crystal clear waters and the Calanque du Mugel.

-The old Port, an authentic place with its bars, restaurants and shops. It is an ideal place to walk and to admire the boats.

- Mugel Park, botanical park located on a hill above the beach of the same name. It offers spectacular sea views and is home to a wide variety of plants and trees.

-The Eden Theater cinemaconsidered the oldest cinema in the world still in operation. It was built in 1889 and is a witness to the history of cinema.

Calanque du Mugel

CREEKS

The Calanques, a natural gem, stretch for several kilometers along the coast. They offer a unique landscape of steep cliffs, craggy rocks and secluded coves, which flow into a deep blue Mediterranean Sea.
Visitors can discover spectacular rock formations here, such as the famous cliffs of Soubeyranes, which rise more than 300 meters above the sea. These impressive cliffs are considered the highest in Europe and offer a spectacle impressive, with their layers of whitish limestone which contrast with the intense azure of the sea.
There are also many beaches, coves and coves accessible only by sea or by steep paths. Hiking enthusiasts can take these trails that wind through hills and cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the sea and the surrounding nature.
Divers and water sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the crystal clear waters of the Calanques to explore the seabed and practice activities such as diving, windsurfing or kayaking. In addition to their natural beauty, the Calanques are of historical importance. and cultural. There are vestiges of prehistoric times, caves dating from Roman times, as well as historic buildings such as the Chapel of the Blue Penitents, which dates from the 17th century.

La Chapelle de Notre Dame de la Garde

 

Au sommet d'une petite colline située au Sud-Est de la commune de la Ciotat se trouve la Chapelle de Notre Dame de la Garde.

Construite au début du 17ème siècle (1610) par les pénitents bleus, on y accède en traversant un lotissement de maisons toutes blanches ou en empruntant un petit chemin depuis l'entrée de celui-ci.
Derrière la chapelle, un petit escalier permet de grimper jusque sur le sommet de la colline, offrant une vue dégagée sur La Ciotat et le Bec de l'Aigle ainsi que sur des falaises puis au loin l'archipel de Riou
